The National Health and Medical Research Council And Formulated Meal Replacements
The National Health and Medical Research Council supports the use of low energy meal replacement products as a strategy to assist in weight loss. The Dietitians’ Association of Australia agrees, saying partial meal replacements seem to be safe, acceptable to patients and more effective over the long term than most other diet-based weight loss techniques.

The Medical Journal of Australia And Formulated Meal Replacements
The Medical Journal of Australia says that as well as being generally cheaper than other weight loss programs, meal replacements have also been proven to have huge benefits for diabetics due to controlled glucose levels, and they also provide an easy, inexpensive way to administer and supervise weight loss.
It also says the use of a meal replacement diet commonly results in weight loss of around 9 - 10 per cent of total body weight in the first 6 - 12 months. This compares to 3 - 7 per cent loss of total body weight with other popular forms of diet plans.

Regulation of Formulated Meal Replacements
Formulated Meal Replacements are governed by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), an independent statutory agency that regulates food content and labelling to ensure a safe food supply and informed consumers. This means that aside from taste, price and accompanying advice Formulated Meal Replacement products in Australia are very similar.
One serve of a Formulated Meal Replacement must contain no less than:
- 12g protein
- 850kJ
- 25% of the Recommended Daily Allowance of Vitamin A, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Calcium, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Zinc
Formulated Meal Replacements are safe for replacing one to two meals a day. Beware of meal replacement products that do not comply with FSANZ standards. These may not provide sufficient energy and/or nutrients for safe meal replacement. |
